Industrial Flooring: Why Apply Sealant to Impregnation, Coating or Screed?

8. Improving the Surface
8.1 Scratch Resistance
Industrial coatings of PUR or EP are hardened with a 1-component PUR sealant, which gives them more resistance to scratches (120 g/m2).
Costs (materials + labour):
EUR 0.96 + EUR 0.50 = EUR 1.46 per m2
8.2 Terrazzo Effect with Coloured Chips
Sprinkled coloured chips must be given glass-clear protection using a 1-component PUR sealant (150 g/m2). This kind of coating is difficult to renovate once it has become worn.
8.3 Matt Finishing
A glossy surface becomes matt through use, or as a result of a matt finish (150 g/m2). At 160 mg, wear can be very high, so its use is not advisable.
8.4 Resistance to UV Light
A surface is made resistant to UV light through protection with a special 2-component PUR sealant (150 g/m2). Since the wear value of 80 mg can be much higher than that of a 1-component PUR sealant that is not resistant to UV light, its use is not advisable.
Costs (materials + labour):
EUR 0.00 + EUR 1.00 = EUR 0.00 per m2
8.5 Colouring Agents for Transparent Impregnation:
A 1-component PUR impregnation stabilises the concrete surface and binds the dust (250 g/m2). It can be resistant to osmosis. A defined, reproducible surface is created for following layers. A second (transparent) layer can be applied (150 g/m2) for increased durability. Colour is created using the same product, although containing pigment, with a 0.1 mm layer thickness. It can be occasionally renovated. A 1 to 3 mm thick industrial coating of 2-component PUR reaction polymer, with sealant for surface hardening, is better.
8.6 Aesthetics: Visual Aspects (Long Term)
If high value is placed on the aesthetics, which is by no means always the case for floors, expensive products must be employed, which, as with matt finishes, UV light resistance or rolled coatings, are by no means as resistant to wear and therefore not as durable as unpigmented 1-component PUR sealants. The softeners in colouring pastes can greatly reduce wear resistance.
