7. Training through multimedia

The built-in reliability of a process also involves instructions on use, which may be video-supported, as well as training for users. One must also examine whether the instructions have actually been read, understood and are correctly remembered even after a lengthy period. Computer-based learning programs which are always brought up to date by the instructor himself have proved successful. Multimedia is the training method of the future.

It is always amazing how materials which are difficult to use can certainly produce excellent results even when used by lay persons (occasionally referred to as amateurs). One example is boat building using glass-reinforced, unsaturated polyesters. Even houses are built with help from neighbours. You can always find a skilled person who is prepared to help. The training is then autodidactic. However, many materials should only be made available to the DIY man in small quantities. Otherwise, product liability could be serious.

If the projects are larger the material must be only made available to authorized placement contractors who are repeatedly kept up to date through further training. They receive their "authorization" after intensive training which is refreshed according to "Train and Visit" at certain intervals. The contractor receives a full set of manuals which permit quick, uncomplicated access to all the relevant topics. A CD-ROM is advisable. Training is held by qualified instructors who have a command of and demonstrate manual work.

At instructor costs of DM 100,000 a year and based on 200 possible training days, a training day costs DM 500. On the training course, in which up to 6 contractors participate, the manuals are brought up to date and the CD-ROM containing the entire information system may be replaced.
