9 Reliability of use

Basics of Industrial Floors

by Dipl.-Chem. Dr. Peter Seidler

Industrial Floors 1987, International Colloquium Jan 13-15, 1987

9. Reliability in use

All these are questions which we must ask ourselves. Perhaps at the next colloquium we shall find better and more practical solutions and methods of achieving greater reliability when placing industrial floors. What is important is to define the gaps in our knowledge so that we can identify more accurately the path or paths which we have to follow.

Galileo Galilei expressed the following opinion:

We must measure everything that is measurable and we must try to make ineasurable anything that cannot be measured.

This sentence is absolutely correct in this context. However, a quotation from Max Planck is also relevant and, in my opinion, it is no banal statement:

Before using a measurement it must first be interpreted.

We would do well to give serious consideration to the following thought expressed by Gadamers, which I would like to quote in conclusion:

An expert who does not take pleasure in questioning things and pointing to alternatives is no expert at all and exceeds the limits of science. Nowadays people buy or hire themselves experts to do their arguing for them. Science must constantly be aware of its own limits and must be accompanied by alert and informed citizens and politicians fin this context one could add building owners 13).
