RILEM TC 184 "Industrial Floors"

Annual Status and Progress Report

by Peter Seidler (Chairman)

astradur AG • D-66976 Rodalben/Pfalz (Germany)

Preliminary Remark:
The essential work was the preparation of the 5th International Colloqium "Industrial Floors'03" which will be held at the Technical Academy Esslingen from 21st to 23rd of January, 2003. The program is now available on 56 pages with 20.000 copies distributed worldwide to the interested public. I like to thank all the members of the committee participating in the preparation for their very helpful support.

In this respect it is worthwhile to note that it is not possible to involve only (paying) members of RILEM if a complete representation of the art has to be attained.

Prof. Granju (INSA Toulouse) created a new TC RLS on repair of concrete with cementitious materials. This committee had its 1st meeting 24th May in Paris and the 2nd meeting is scheduled at the end of October in Phoenix AZ (USA). This work is complementary to our committee. Thus, the two TCs will work closely together which is seen by the participation of TC RLS in the 5th colloquium. At the 20th of January we will have two consecutive sessions at Esslingen (Germany): TC 184 at 09:00 and TC RLS at 13:00.

Unfortunately I was not able to attend the Annual Week this year due to the overlapping with the Intern. Congress "Challenges of Concrete Construction" in Dundee (Scotland) from 5th to 11th of September where I was invited to present one of the opening adresses.

Meetings:
Due to the time consuming preparation of the colloquium and the economical situation in Germany there was only one meeting 2002 during the 9. International Congress on Durability in Brisbane (Australia). It was attended by six members. The TC discussed in depth the English version of the AGI worksheet A 80. It will be published at the TC's Internet site and will be printed later.

Work Accomplished and in Progress:
The work was effective during the first three years. The TC - in spite of its ever changing composition of participants - was able to terminate a method for benchmarking coatings and similar products. Rules for guidelines were presented. Both documents were published on the CD-ROM during the 54th Annual Week at the UNESCO in Paris 2000.

It is intended to discuss a "Reclamations Report" which should be very useful as a standardized approach for the correlation of field analysis with laboratory results in the case of damages.

Work on a "State of the Art Report" will be started after the results of the 5th colloquium.

Publications:
See above. The proceedings of the colloquium will be available with the contents of the four prior colloquia since 1987 on an updated CD-ROM. The CD-ROM "Industrial Floors' 99" is now available at the Internet: www.irbdirekt.de/ib/

Plans for Future Activities:
I think it should be useful to ask Jerry Holland to form a new TC with the title "Shrinking Compensating Concrete for Non-curling Industrial Floors without Joints and Cracks". The scope of this topic is out of the reach of TC 184.

Evaluation of the Progress:
The TC is concerned with knowledge transfer in a broad definition. This is a very difficult task because of the opacity of the market and the doubtful relevancy of many testing procedures. Thus, progress is slow, but the colloquium is demonstrating that some progress is achieved. There are more and more people interested in this difficult domain of physics and chemistry. Hopefully, there will be more financial support be granted to achieve progress more rapidly.

Date of Completion of TC Work:
The TC will present a "State of the Art Report" during the 6th Intern. Colloquium January 2007.

Presentation during RILEM Week:
During the 57th Annual Week in Portugal in September 2003 I will present a preliminary report on the results of the colloquium and the TC's work.
